More On The School Demolition Project

Category: School News — Chuck @ 4:18 pm

Remember my post about the school board decision to tear down the old school? Well, there’s another story in the Sarasota Herald Tribune about it which you can find here.

Apparently there’s opposition and it just doesn’t sound to me from the stories like the preservationists are being given much consideration.

I wrote a letter to the editor drawing attention to your comments on the post back in February. Feel free to chime in if you’d like.

    Tearing Down The Old School

Category: School News — Chuck @ 5:59 pm

Here’s more on the fact that there’s a plan to tear down the old Riverview High School building from Bennie Barton:

Some of you may know that they plan to tear down the the Riverview School Building and build a new school in it’s place. The old building has a great deal of architectural significance and if you would like to know more, we have added a page to the Class of 76 Reunion site that features some photos of the school building and several web links to articles about the school.

There is even a link to the American Institute of Architects petition to save the school. You might find the articles to be an interesting read as we begin to wax nostalgic as our 30 Year Reunion rapidly approaches. Just follow this link to the new page…

    Tearing Down The Old School

Category: School News — Chuck @ 7:16 pm

Photo From Sarasota Herald TribuneThanks to our alert reunion director Nancy for pointing me to this story from the Sarasota Herald Tribune.

One of the most important buildings of the “Sarasota school” of architecture, the regional adaptation of mid-century modernism, is Riverview High School. It’s significant as the first public building in Florida by the undisputed leading architect of the Sarasota school, Paul Rudolph. Now, the structure, built in 1958, is slated for demolition.

I can’t say that I ever heard of Paul Rudolph. Now I have though. What do you think? Should they tear it down?

    Cafeteria Food Not The Same

Category: School News — Chuck @ 8:01 pm

Do you remember eating cafeteria food? What was your favorite or least favorite? Whatever it was the menu has changed. Here’s what’s on it for tomorrow:

    Pizza

    Turkey Submarine

    Egg Salad Platter

    Spinach/Garden Cup

    Fresh Fruit Cup/ Peaches

    Chilled Orange Juice

What ever happened to hamburgers, french fries, tater tots, etc.? What is spinach/garden cup and what self-respecting teen would eat it? The pizza sounds okay, as long as there’s some major amounts of cheese and pepperoni on it!
