<img align="right"vspace="5"hspace="5"src="http://www.zimmcomm.biz/images/rams/50-cruise.gif" border="1"alt="50 Year Cruise" />Going on a cruise when we turn 50 years old seems like a good idea right now. It was discussed around and plans are being made.

I got a note from Bennie who’s on top of it (of course). So I’m going to let him talk now.

Ok, so you’re not quite even recovered from our big blowout this past weekend and here comes another temptation to let your hair down (for those of us who still have it anyways). But do not be alarmed, we’re talking about an event that’s at least a year and a half away, an eon of time to consider the ramifications of such a foolhardy endeavor as planting your feet on a seagoing vessel (also plenty of time for a new-fangeled remedy to get that hair back).

So here’s what happened this past weekend… Everyone who got together in Sarasota had a great time, they saw old friends and universally said it had been too long. Talk of time ultimately brought up the fact that everyone was fast approaching the Half Century Mark (50 years for you non-math folks) and conversations quickly lead to ideas about celebrating everyone’s 50th birthday. Now two honest facts about this is that it was some of the girls who got this started and they had intentions of making it a real “Girl” thing but that quickly got squashed by some of us guys who thought that our Half Century of Life on this good earth was just as worthy of celebration as theirs. The second fact of this celebratory coalition is that it is not unique. There are many classes who have these 50th Birthday Bashes so we can’t claim originality, but by god, by the time it’s all over and done with, we will be able to claim superiority!

A little known fact is we first tested the waters for a cruise for the 30th Reunion and met with some favorable responses. Ultimately we decided that the land based option would provide for a better turn-out and we certainly did have a good showing. Some of those who knew of the original plans still had a hankering to cruise the seven seas though and thus was born the Birthday Bash Cruise idea. I have all ready heard from at least 10 people to count them in, so in effect, this email is the start of the flushing out of this idea.

First the good news, whatever we decide, we have an honest to goodness, bona fide expert to help us through this whole cruise business. Lorrie Feid and her husband own a Cruise Travel Agency in Sarasota and they have the means to help us put this thing together once we decide what we want to do. You ask, What is there to decide? Well deciding to pick a cruise is about as easy as picking a pair of Black Shoes out of my wife’s closet. Although I could easily come up with at least a couple dozen personally, she felt it was necessary to have new pair that better fit the occasion.

<img align="left"vspace="5"hspace="5"src="http://www.zimmcomm.biz/images/rams/50-cruise-cutaway.gif" border="1"alt="50 Year Cruise" />Here goes the possible list of factors that go into picking a cruise:
(I’ve got six cruises under my Captains Hat personally)

1. Time of Year
2. Length of Cruise
3. Cruise Line
4. Type of Ship
5. Departure Port
6. Cruise Destination(s)
7. Cost

These seven factors, while not entirely, do somewhat encompass what you need to consider in selecting a cruise. Many of these factors are intertwined and have an effect on the other criteria in the selection process. For those of you who have cruised before the following may be a bit of what you already know, but for the sake of those who are cruise novices, a bit of a primer follows.

1. Time of Year:
The date on which you would like to take your cruise can influence your decision to a great degree. If price is an important factor in your cruise decision, you will find that a cruise you like can be one price on a certain date and be a completely different price on another both higher or lower. In other words cruising is a capacity based travel option just like hotels and airlines. There are cheaper times of the year to cruise than others. One other factor that time has on a cruise is that if your cruise destination(s) are in the Caribbean, during the summer months you have the possibility of Tropical weather. It was suggested by some folks that we go in November after the tropical season but then that starts to get close to the holidays when people are looking for time off for family reasons. I guarantee you one thing for certain, we will never get a unanimous decision on time of year. Two things are for certain, late Fall and Early Spring are good times to find lower cruise prices.

2. Length of Cruise:
You can take a day cruise that lasts 12 hours or you can take an around the world cruise that can take 6 months. You can also find a cruise that is any other length
between those two extremes. So what to choose? Here again, price can play a factor. The shorter the cruise, the less it costs, is one of those statements that has that
hidden type of fine print that is not readily apparent. You might have a total cost that is lower on a 3-Night cruise but a 5-Night cruise can actually be less per day in
some instances. The old adage in cruising is, the shorter the cruise, the older the ship. Cruise lines tend to rotate their older vessels down to the 3 and 4 night itinerary
cruises and keep their newer ships for the longer haul routes. The length of your cruise also determines the destination(s) you have the opportunity to see. You can’t
get very far on a 3-Night cruise so your ports-of-call are limited. A longer cruise has it’s draw backs as well. 7-Night cruises are very popular but if you have to travel
to your departure port you might need more time than a week off from work can get you.

3. Cruise Line:
No two ways about it, there are good ones and bad ones and everything in between. You really do get what you pay for. That being said, there are real luxury cruise lines
that would not be appropriate for a group like ours where cost is one of our primary concerns.

4. Type of Ship:
Yes, they still have those barefoot, sailboat cruises for the adventuresome, and they have floating cities that you couldn’t see all of in a month of Sundays. The one good
rule of thumb is newer is usually better.

5. Departure Port:
You can start a cruise from dozens of locations around the country and hundreds across the world. Ultimately where you want to go on your cruise will determine your
departure port, but you can actually get to some of the same places from different ports. If you wanted to go to the Western Caribbean you can get there from Texas,
Louisiana, several locations in Florida and island ports like San Juan. The farther the port from your home generally the more your total cost is.

6. Cruise Destinations:
You can cruise to Glaciers in Alaska, cruise the Hawaiian Islands, Eastern & Western Caribbean, Europe, the Mediterranean, the Greek Isles any where your imagination
can take you, there’s a cruise that can get you there. Time of year and price considerations are your only limiting factors.

7. Cost:
“Therein Lies The Rub” You can spend 39.95 for a day cruise ticket and tens of thousands on 3-week transatlantic journey. Ultimately we have to decide what is the worth of this celebration of our 50 years of earthly servitude and what follows is my humble attempt to put a price on such an endeavor.

We are going to take your input on what you think is best and try to come up with a consensus. But with a little research I am going to put forth one initial suggestion to put everything in a frame work so that we can have a common starting ground to begin our discussions.

I give you this possibility… (Click here for picture of itinerary)

A 5-Night cruise on the Royal Caribbean ship Navigator of the Seas that would depart on Monday, April 7, 2008 from Ft. Lauderdale, Fl and return on Saturday morning, April 12, 2008. The ship visits the ports of call in the Western Caribbean of Cozumel, Mexico and Belize City, Belize. The staring cost of cabins for this sailing date is $499.00 per person for the 5-Nights and includes all meals and cabin accommodations. (It remains to be seen if we can get an even better starting price based on a group booking)

The time of year is one of the better pricing periods, it misses the tropical weather season, it misses the big holiday season, it is with one of the better cruise lines, the ship was brand new in 2002, it is one of Royal Caribbean’s larger ship categories (over three football fields long), it has a couple of exotic ports of call, and it has a weekend before and after for traveling to and from the departure port.

If you really have not looked into cruising before it is quite an experience especially if you went on this type of ship…

<img align="right"vspace="5"hspace="5"src="http://www.zimmcomm.biz/images/rams/rhs-06-29.jpg" border="1"alt="Say Goodbye Picture" />Bennie is at work still. Here’s his latest note:

They say that all good things must come to an end, and it is true that our official 30 Year Reunion Activities have come to a close. But the end is no where in sight, you could even say that we have only just begun…

On behalf of the 30-Year Reunion Committee, I would like to extend our thanks to everyone who made the journey, be it near or far, to attend the festivities here in Sarasota over the past weekend. We started out on Thursday night with an informal get-together and went right on through to Sunday afternoon with our Picnic Finally!

To everyone who would have liked to have joined us, but for any number of reasons could not, we say that you were sorely missed, but not forgotten. Throughout the event we showed everyone’s photo on TV screens so that we could reminisce about absent and present friends equally. The photo collage above shows the beautiful cake that our classmate Ron Zammitt made for our Friday Cocktail Party and the group photo was taken at the Saturday Dinner/Dance.

<img align="left"vspace="5"hspace="5"src="http://www.zimmcomm.biz/images/rams/rhs-06-30.jpg" border="1"alt="Bennie's Badge" />The group shot does not do justice to our actual attendance as we had to take it very early in the evening on Saturday as we were losing the sunlight to take a good photo. I estimate that 30 to 40 classmates that attended the Saturday event did not make it into this photo. But it at least is a nice representative sample of the happy group that we had. All together, we had a little over 200 people attend the weekend’s events.

I’ve got to get some real work done this week for my clients but by next week, I’ll have photo albums set up on the
Reunion Web Site www.rhsspiritof76.com and also information about
our upcoming Memory DVD that everyone
who attended will receive or if you did not attend you will have a chance to buy for a minimal cost.

As has been normal this weekend, the committee did a great job of planning and preparing. The meal was ribs, chicken, slaw, etc. from The Oaks BBQ.

We had a lot of food left over but fortunately someone brought zip loc bags so we all were able to do take out.

<img align="left"vspace="5"hspace="5"src="http://www.zimmcomm.biz/images/rams/rhs-06-23.jpg" border="1"alt="Saturday Picnic" />I just got into my Mother-in-law’s house in Ft. Lauderdale and had it for supper. Mmm good.

I think we had about 50 people show up today and it was a really nice and relaxing way to wind down the weekend. The park was beautiful.

Bennie had arranged for some canoes and a number of us were able to go out on the creek and paddle around. I didn’t bring my camera in the canoe but Bennie and Liz had there’s. I’m counting on them to email me one.
